These plates are made from pulp left over from the processing of sugar cane and have a natural, slightly off-white natural colour. Because it is a by-product and sugar cane grows so quickly, it is a highly renewable resource. The 9" size is an adult dinner sized plate.  Image is of both 6" and 9" plates together. "Earthens" are made by villagers in India from dried leaves of the Areca palm tree as they naturally dry and fall, which means no trees are harvested to produce these plates - they are made from nature's leftovers.  The leaf is molded at a temperature of 100 degrees celsius where it becomes the shape of a plate or bowl.  This process also serves to sterilize the leaf.  No pesticides are used, and no colour, wax, or dye is added during manufacturing.  Earthens come in various shades of cream and brown, beautifully designed by Mother Nature herself.     Sold in packages of 25, these plates have a generous lip and could also be used as shallow bowls.
